The Victorian Government has announced the appointment of Dr Mark Oakley Browne as the state's new Chief Psychiatrist.

“This is a timely appointment given Dr Oakley Browne will play a key role during the implementation of the new Mental Health Act,” State Minister for Mental Health Mary Wooldridge said.

“Dr Oakley Browne will also promote clinical practice cultural change within mental health services and oversee the development of clinical policies, processes and practices for mental health services.

“I am confident that Dr Oakley Browne will provide excellent clinical leadership and continue to improve the quality and safety of mental health services and promote the rights of people receiving mental health services in Victoria.”

The Chief Psychiatrist is responsible for the medical care and welfare of persons receiving treatment or care for a mental illness. This includes a responsibility to enhance the welfare of consumers receiving treatment for a mental illness and their carers, within a recovery oriented model of care.

Ms Wooldridge also announced Dr Brett Coulson as the new Deputy Chief Psychiatrist (aged persons’ mental health). Dr Coulson is a psychogeriatrician at North West Mental Health Service and has worked in regional Victoria and in New South Wales and Western Australia.

Dr Oakley Browne, who has been the Clinical Director of Statewide and Mental Health Services in Tasmania, will take up the role after his predecessor, Dr Ruth Vine, steps down from the role.
