The Victorian Government has announced Plenary Health as the preferred bidder for the construction of the state’s $1 billion new Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre (VCCC)

The State Government has announced it intends to ‘move as quickly as possible’ to progress negotiations with Plenary Health towards signing a contract and finalizing arrangements. The next key milestone in the project, contract signing, is expected to be achieved in late November 2011.

The centre contain the following:

  • 160 overnight inpatient cancer beds
  • 42-bed Intensive Care Unit
  • 110 same day beds
  • A dedicated Clinical Trials Unit with 24 treatment places
  • 8 medihotel beds, with additional space for Country Patient overnight accommodation
  • 8 operating theatres and two procedure rooms
  • 8 radiation therapy bunkers

The VCCC will span two sites – the main building being the site of the former Dental Hospital in Parkville, which is currently being prepared for construction, and redevelopments at the Royal Melbourne Hospital's City Campus.

The architectural design team is led by Design Inc and Silver Thomas Hanley in partnership with McBride Charles Ryan.

The announcement of the Plenary Health consortium as the preferred bidder follows the successful conclusion of an exclusive negotiation phase between the state and Plenary Health that was undertaken in accordance with national Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Guidelines.
