The Western Australian Government has called for expressions of interest  members of Western Australia’s five new public health service governing councils.

Health Minister Kim Hames said the nine-member councils would play an important role in planning, monitoring and reporting on health services across the State, and engagement with community and clinical stakeholders.

“We are looking for community members and clinicians from across WA who can bring a broad range of skills and experience and a shared commitment to quality, responsive health services,” Dr Hames said.

The introduction of governing councils is part of a major restructure of public health system governance and aligns with reforms at the national level.

The number of health services will increase to five, with two services in the metropolitan area, one child and adolescent service, and two distinct country health services.

“The southern country and northern and remote country areas of the State will now be served by their own distinct health services reflecting the unique interests and health needs of our diverse country communities,” the Minister said.

“This will enable us to further enhance the excellent healthcare service provided in the last six years across country WA by the WA Country Health Service.”

Council members will be selected by the Minister for Health and support the Minister by taking responsibility through the health service chief executive officer for clearly defined governance functions.

Council members will be remunerated in line with State Government guidelines. Expressions of interest close February 15, 2012.
