About ADRI

The Asbestos Diseases Research Institute (ADRI), located in Concord NSW is the only stand-alone, dedicated medical research institute focussed on asbestos and dust-related diseases with a national and international footprint. 

We are recognised as the world’s centre of excellence in this research and in 2021, the World Health Organization designated ADRI as its Collaborating Centre for Elimination of Asbestos-Related Diseases.  This was a world first and led to our being named as a training partner of the United Nations Environment Planning Agency (UNEP).

About the role:

The position will be working under the supervision of Research Director and senior ADRI researchers on projects that investigate potential innovative treatment strategies (Immunotherapy and natural anti-cancer product) and/or diagnostic biomarkers to improve health outcomes for mesothelioma patients. Additionally, you will be assisted in developing a 3D co-culture model for drug screening in treating mesothelioma. 

Key Duties: 

In this role you will be expected to: 

  • Perform and assist with preclinical animal models e.g., tissue collection, preparation, and cell isolation. 
  • Culturing and maintaining mesothelioma cell lines and primary cells. 
  • Extracting and purifying DNA, RNA and/or protein from mesothelioma cells, tissue and blood specimens. 
  • Assist biological, cell biological and molecular techniques, particularly flow cytometry, ELISA, seahorse assay, and RT-PCR/droplet digital PCR
  • Perform data analyses and materials for reports to be written by principals and staff on the research project. 
  • Contribute to the production of conference and seminar papers and publication from research 
  • Share responsibility for laboratory maintenance and managing lab stock and consumables. 

Skills and Experience 

  • Relevant undergraduate degree, graduate diploma or equivalent research experience
  • Experience with the preclinical mouse model with animal handling skills e.g., intravenous and intraperitoneal injection
  • Confidence in performing a diverse range of laboratory techniques, ranging from biotechnological methods to basic and translational science.
  • Willingness to learn new techniques and work as part of a team.
  • Understanding of research areas related to diagnosis biomarkers such as circular RNA.
