The Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) is a vital part of Australia’s biosecurity infrastructure. Our team works closely with researchers, animal and human health agencies to protect Australia’s livestock and aquaculture industries, and the general public, from emerging infectious disease threats.

As an experienced virologist, the Research Scientist – Lumpy Skin Disease Research, will join the Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) research team at the ACDP. A focus of the LSD research team is to undertake and support research and development activities that deliver to the National Lumpy Skin Disease Action plan, as well as to facilitate research for CSIRO’s research programs. LSD is a vector borne disease of cattle and is considered to be one of the most economically important viral diseases of cattle, due to its impacts on animal health, production and trade. As the disease is now present in South-East Asia, you will support key preparedness activities, develop our research portfolio and contribute to enhanced response capability should incursion occur.

In this role you will:

• Carry out innovative, impactful research of strategic importance to CSIRO that will, where possible, lead to novel and important scientific outcomes.
• Where required, lead, plan and coordinate priority research activities.
• Seek new approaches when encountering unforeseen problems. 
• Network with scientific colleagues, challenge current approaches, and generate new theoretical perspectives. 
• Present results in a meaningful format, prepare reports for project milestones, clients and/or write scientific papers for publication.  
• Provide co-supervision, training and coaching to students, postdoctoral researchers and technical staff.
• Represent the research team and group internally and externally, including scientific forums, conferences and workshops.

Location: Geelong - Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), Victoria, Australia
Salary: AU$105k - AU$114k per annum, plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

1. A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a relevant field such as virology, vaccine development, immunology or similar. 
2. Theoretical and practical experience in classical and molecular techniques applicable to the study of infectious diseases and their causative agents.
3. Research and diagnostic virology experience in Capripoxviruses.
4. High level communication and influencing skills, including the ability to manage stakeholder expectations for mutual benefit.
5. Meticulous attention to detail.
6. A publication history of authorship on scientific papers in peer reviewed journals and/or reports, grant applications or inventorship on patent applications. 
7. A record of science innovation, agility and creativity.
