The Department of the Environment & Energy designs and implements Australian Government policy and programs to protect and conserve the environment, water and heritage, promote climate action, and provide adequate, reliable and affordable energy.

People Branch, Corporate Services Division is committed to the provision of timely, effective and professional human resource (HR) services to guide the organisation’s HR development and capacity to successfully deliver on its business outcomes. 

The Safety and Wellbeing Section supports the delivery of operational safety in Divisions and development of the frameworks to facilitate the health and safety of our people and the people who our work directly affects.

The Role & Duties

This role supports the operational delivery of safety to the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD), and reports to Safety and Wellbeing Section, People Branch.

Based in Hobart this role will manage a small team to provide advice and work closely with the AAD Support and Operations Branch, and clients across the Australian Antarctic Division and Australian Antarctic Program.

Working with key stakeholders you will contribute to the development of WHS frameworks, including appropriate controls and risk minimisation strategies, and processes for assurance and monitoring, in your specific area of expertise.

You will draw on your WHS knowledge, and or experience in high risk work environments, in relation to the application of WHS laws and provide technical advice on:

    • remote and extreme environments
    • international maritime environment
    • plant, construction and design
    • contractor management
    • science and laboratories
    • radiation and hazardous chemicals

You will also:

  • assist in the identification and assessment of critical risk controls
  • undertake WHS audit and assurance activities at all locations
  • think strategically, and demonstrate a positive contribution to the development of an integrated WHS framework for the Department
  • identify and implement system and service improvements
  • identify and provide information to the AAD Executive that will assist in the excise of their due diligence obligations
  • partner with colleagues and engage with key stakeholders to support the outcomes of the Section and Branch.

The Ideal Candidates Skills & Experience

  • must have as a minimum:
    • 5 years’ experience in WHS
    • technical knowledge in one of the following areas: construction, occupational hygiene, hazardous chemicals, laboratory science, radiation safety, ergonomics, contractor management, or WHS assurance/WHS investigation, and
  • tertiary qualifications in WHS or related fields will be highly regarded.

Eligibility

Please note to be eligible for this role you:

  • must be an Australian Citizen
  • must undergo and satisfy a National Police History Check
  • may be required to obtain and maintain an appropriate security clearance if required
  • travel may be required to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions therefore the successful applicant will be expected to meet specific medical, adaptability and personal qualities requirements appropriate to working in those environments.
