New research shows Australians are not good at estimating their own blood-alcohol content.

Researchers surveyed about 2,000 people out at Queensland night-time entertainment precincts and asked them to estimate their blood-alcohol content (BAC) before testing it with a breathalyser.

They found that those with a low BAC were likely to overestimate it, those with a higher BAC were more likely to underestimate it and mildly intoxicated participants were most likely to be accurate in their guess.

The researchers say participants with a high BAC who underestimated it were more likely to report having been recently kicked out of a venue.
