Dozens of clinical incidents in a short period have prompted an investigation at the Rockhampton Base Hospital.

The Queensland Government has sent the Central Queensland Health Service to investigate 33 serious clinical incidents at the regional hospital since 2011.

But Health Minister Lawrence Springborg says the Rockhampton Hostpital is "absolutely" providing the best care possible.

He says the cases of unexpected death and permanent harm were within normal bounds.

“I don't believe that [the number of investigations] is remarkably higher,” Mr Springborg told ABC today.

“I don't think people should jump to the conclusion that they are any less safe in Rockhampton.

“There had been issues previously with regards to non-implication of recommended patient safety improvements and they have gone back several years.”

“They have lifted the lid on it and dived in very deeply to make sure that they have the best patient safety and procedures.”

But the Opposition's health spokesperson Jo-Ann Miller says an independent investigation should be undertaken.

“The LNP Government sacked more than 100 people from the statewide patient safety unit," she said.

"The LNP Government also abolished the Health Quality and Complaints Commission which investigated.

“I'm certainly concerned about Rockhampton Hospital investigating Rockhampton Hospital,” she told reporters.

“I believe it should be taken to a much higher level.”
