The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is dedicated to finding cures for cardiovascular disease through world class medical research. Established in 1994, it is the legacy of legendary heart transplant surgeon Victor Chang. Renowned for the quality of its breakthroughs, the Victor Chang Institute is working to discover better ways to diagnose, treat and ultimately prevent the onset of heart disease.
The role
The WHS Manager is accountable for the overarching development, implementation and administration of the policies, procedures and training necessary to ensure the Institute achieves a high standard of workplace safety, injury management, emergency preparedness and is compliant with all related legislative requirements.
Duties and responsibilities include:
- Actively manage workplace health and safety issues, including management systems, policies and procedures and legislative, regulatory and licensing requirements for the Institute
- Develop the aims and objectives and drive the implementation of the WHS Strategic Plan and annual WHS plan
- Achieve workplace health, safety objectives (KPI’s, KAI’s) and legislative compliance
- Develop reports regarding workplace health, safety and quality performance and initiatives
- Promote the Institute’s WHS Framework to all relevant stakeholders
- Act as ‘primary contact person’ for Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) and liaison for Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC);
- Act as the Return to Work Coordinator
- Deliver WHS training and education programs
About you
We would like to meet you if you have:
- Relevant qualifications (diploma or degree) in WHS and Return to Work Coordinator certification.
- Significant experience in Workplace Health, Safety Management within a complex organisational structure
- Extensive knowledge and high level of technical ability in Workplace Health Safety and other relevant legislation, regulations, standards and codes of practice
- Proven experience in developing, implementing and monitoring of a WHS Management System, and the supporting plans, policies, procedures and guidelines
- Strong knowledge of current WHS legislation and demonstrated ability to keep abreast of environmental changes and updates
- Experience in the design, delivery and evaluation of risk assessment, safety, compliance programs to all staff
- Well-developed analytical skills and the ability to develop practical solutions
- Experience within a medical research institute and/or the not-for-profit sector will be advantageous
